Associate Professor of Management and Organizations, Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management

Elizabeth McClean, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Management and Organizations in the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University. She earned all three of her degrees, including her Ph.D., from Cornell University's School of Industrial and Labor Relations. Before joining Cornell in 2021, she was an Assistant Professor at the University of Arizona's Eller College of Management and previously worked as a human capital consultant at Mercer.

Dr. McClean's research examines leadership, employee voice, strategic human resource management, and gender in organizations. Her primary research focuses on bottom-up organizational change, exploring what motivates employees to speak up with ideas for improvement and how leaders and organizations respond to those ideas. She studies the barriers that prevent organizations from fully leveraging employee insights to drive innovation and frequently partners with organizations to identify practices that foster cultures where employees feel safe sharing ideas and leaders are equipped to act on them.

Her secondary research examines gender in the workplace, including how the outcomes of speaking up can differ for women and men and the strategies that make ideas for change more likely to gain support. More broadly, her work explores how organizational policies, leadership, and workplace practices shape employee experiences and organizational effectiveness.
