Steve Jackson

Professor of Information Science and Science and Technology Studies

Steve is a Professor of Information Science and Science and Technology Studies, former Chair of the Cornell Information Science Department, and former House Professor-Dean at Keeton House. He teaches and conducts research in the areas of information ethics, law, and policy; human-computer interaction; technology maintenance and repair; and computing and the environment, with special interest in problems of ethics, practice, learning, and sustainability in fields undergoing rapid computational change. His work has appeared in over 80 journal articles and conference proceedings, won numerous awards, and has been supported by funders ranging from the U.S. National Science Foundation and Social Science Research Council to the Ford Foundation, Intel Research, World Bank, and the Cornell Atkinson Center for Sustainability. He holds a Ph.D. in Communication and Science Studies from the University of California, San Diego; an M.A. in Political Economy from Carleton University in Ottawa; and a B.A. in English and Creative Writing from Concordia University in Montreal. Along with his partner Kary and kids Oliver (18) and Lucia (16), he enjoys biking, kayaking, cross-country skiing, reading (history and philosophy to sci fi), and listening to records (especially jazz).  Since leaving Keeton House, he has resumed his life as a humble goat farmer on the family farm in Ellis Hollow.
