Georg Hoffstaetter de Torquat is a Professor in Cornell University's Department of Physics and holds a joint appointment in the Particle Accelerator Department at Brookhaven National Laboratory. His research focuses on particle accelerators, powerful scientific instruments with applications ranging from the production of advanced computer chips to probing some of the deepest mysteries of the universe. 

His research group developed the first multi-turn energy-recovery (often called green) accelerator. Currently, he focuses on the Electron-Ion Collider, the nation's largest accelerator under construction. Beyond his research, Georg loves sailing on Cayuga Lake and introduced Cornell's “Physics of Sailing” class, which uses sailboats as hands-on laboratories for learning physics. He is also an avid tango dancer and met his wife, Alix Hoffstaetter de Torquat, while they were both studying tango in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
